I just found Wafaa Bilal's performance piece on the fifth floor of the
Elizabeth Art Foundation building. It was in a dim, tiny, hot room,
and the artist and tattoo artist had been up most of the night,
etching 17000 of the eventual 100,000 UV ink dots into Bilal's back,
one for each Iraqi killed in the war. Later he will add blue dots,
5000 of them, for each American killed. It's a poignant memorial, and
a stark contrast of the deaths we acknowledge, next to those we ignore.
