I used to update my website every fall, during job-application season. When I got my tenure track-job, I stopped updating the site. A terrible habit to have fallen into! I justified it with the amount of blog activity ("hey, I'm working. I'm documenting it on the blog!")
But enough is enough!
I was planning on doing a major redesign to streamline the updating process, but my web-host has been a jerk this week... so I decided to simplify what I have, and I am very happy with my results. It is uploading as I type this (will I type longer than it will take?).
The pros: it uses pictures rather than titles to separate out projects. Not everyone knows the name of a project, so they should be able to look at what they want now.
The cons: well, I didn't update all the old stuff... there were some projects that I just didn't feel belonged on the site anymore.
The pros: fewer pages and links, so easier to update!
The cons: I took out the categories I added at my last redesign, so you could see all the photo work, the performance work, the new media work, etc. Now, you just click the picture of the work you are interested in, regardless of project.
I never knew how I felt about sites that separated projects by media. Who cares what the media is? Seeing my work as little pictures, I am struck that the look of my work changes a lot between media or even projects. But that's ok, right?
It still isn't up... but chances of one of my followers checking at 11:30PM on a Friday night are slim.
Check it in the morning, at Kristen S. Wilkins
